The first question i’d expect you to ask is why ? We need to go back to 2010 to answer that question. At the time I was approaching 90KG and diagnosed as insulin resistant (a pre-diabetic state). Things needed to change and so I bought my first bike, a Cinelli Xperience, at the time for a seemingly eye-watering price of £1,400. And started to ride it, first 10 miles at a time then building upto 20 miles for a “long” ride.
Next i though, heck i need a challenge and as my 50th birthday was approaching in 2012 i started to research “LEJOG”. Plans started well and i really got into the mood. However the thought of British roads full of potholes, bad food, poor accommodation, disrespectful and outright dangerous car drivers, i was put off.
So the next best thing was to do another challenge, and as i like wine, well why not do another “end to end”, but with a twist, Calais to Montpellier. Hell why not. So I recruited my brother and wife to join and the rest of that is history and can be read in great detail on http://www.troisfous.com.
But, LEJOG was always there, nagging as a spurned mistress.
I started to train more seriously and did a few multi day rides such as London Revolution and Stephen Roche’s ride around Mallorca, so with fitness getting better and weight down to 73KG, all i needed was a nudge to do LEJOG. This came at the beginning of 2016 through the mail. Threshold Sports who run the London Revolution posted invitations to “ride across britain” or RAB as its known. 969 miles in 9 days, fully supported. Hell yes !
So that’s what i did… and below will be some thoughts and musing.
On the left, Condor Accacio stainless steel, bulletproof. On the right, me at John O’Groats, feeling tired.
More to follow….
